BELLINGHAM, WA. – A recent survey found that about half of Washington college students are lacking basic needs.

Nearly 10,000 students participated in the state Student Achievement Council’s basic needs survey.

Basic needs were identified as food or housing and half of students said they lacked one of the two.

The Council found that four in ten students reported experiencing food insecurity in the last month.

Housing was also an issue, with over a third of students saying they experienced housing insecurity in the last year.

Eleven percent of students say they were homeless at some point.

A director at the Student Achievement Council said the findings align with national research that shows a significant portion of Washington students to be missing basic needs.
