OLYMPIA, WA. – (KGMI.com) A new report reveals that nearly all safety rest areas in Washington are in critical condition.
WSDOT just published its first Safety Rest Area Strategic Plan in over a decade to identify needs and challenges for the state-owned facilities.
Their report found that 87% of safety rest areas are in critical condition.
The department is calling for an investment of up to $525 million across the next 15 years to renovate or replace the aging facilities.
Most rest areas are around 50 years old and were not designed to meet the current demand for usage, commercial truck parking and safety concerns for travelers, according to the report.
Washington is home to 47 state-owned safety rest areas, including two in Custer.
