BELLINGHAM, WA. – (KGMI.com) The Bellingham fire chief is responding after the local firefighters’ union issued a warning that two stations were engineless over the weekend.
Bellingham and Whatcom County Firefighters Local #106 posted on social media that Stations 6 and 31 had been operating without fire engines since Friday.
Fire Chief Bill Hewett tells KGMI that a fire engine was already undergoing maintenance when an additional four engines went out of service because of various mechanical issues.
He calls it a perfect storm of equipment breakdowns that left stations on Deemer Road and Bennett Drive without fire response vehicles.
Each of the stations still had a crew on duty with an ambulance to respond to emergencies until they found a temporary fix by noon on Saturday.
Hewett says the department is now back to normal operations with a full fleet of engines in service.
