BELLINGHAM, WA – (KGMI.com) A potential initiative could help more people seek exemptions for Washington’s new long-term care payroll tax.
Voter advocacy group Let’s Go Washington is seeking signatures for Initiative 2124, which would allow all workers to opt out of WA Cares at any time.
King5 reports the initiative has gathered over 420,000 signatures, well over the required total of 324,519 to get it on the ballot.
The WA Cares Fund took effect on July 1st and deducts 0.58% from workers’ gross pay to fund long-term care and related expenses.
Currently, about 200,000 residents qualify for an exemption, including spouses of active-duty military members, people who work but do not live in Washington and temporary foreign workers.
