BELLINGHAM, WA – (KGMI.com) Washington ferry-goers should expect service reductions for years to come.
KOMO News reports Washington State Ferries released its new Ferry Service Contingency Plan detailing how it will move forward with a lack of vessels and what they call an unprecedented staffing shortage.
It will come with reduced ferry service but should make ferry schedules more reliable.
WSF says their new service baseline will be operating the entire ferry system with 15 boats.
The Anacortes to San Juan Islands route will use four vessels total and restoration of service to Sidney, BC won’t happen until at least 2030.
The Seattle to Bremerton and Port Townsend to Coupeville routes will both run with only one vessel.
It’s not just a lack of vessels causing issues though.
WSF says it needs to hire 96 new crew members every year to restore and maintain 18 vessel service moving forward.
