WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A rock climber was rescued in Larrabee State Park after getting stranded on a cliff 60 feet above the beach.
Fire Chief Mitch Nolze with South Whatcom Fire Authority says units were sent to the scene just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The climber was about halfway up the cliff face. They were uninjured but had been on the rock face for about an hour before calling 911.
South Whatcom Fire Authority deployed a rope rescue system to lower a responder down to the stranded climber. The climber was placed into a harness and helmet, then lowered the rest of the way down to the beach below.
Crews from Bellingham Fire Department and the Bellingham Mountain Rescue team also helped to plan and oversee the process. Nolze estimates the rescue took about an hour with 17 to 20 responders on the scene. A fire boat was also called in the event of incoming tide but was not needed.
