BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) A Bellingham man was arrested after a child in his care was poisoned by fentanyl.

Bellingham Police say officers and fire crews were called on Sunday, Feb. 18 when the man discovered the 18-month-old baby was not breathing.

Medics were able to revive the child with Narcan before transporting them to the emergency room, where staff confirmed they had suffered a fentanyl overdose.

The suspect, 38-year-old Nicholas Austin, told officers that he was on the couch with the child when he realized they had taken a straw out of his pocket and began chewing on it.

Austin also admitted to smoking fentanyl with that same straw the night before.

The child made a full recovery and remains in the care of the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Family Services.

Austin was booked into the Whatcom County Jail on Monday, Feb. 26 and was released later that day.
