SEATTLE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced Monday that their free filing service is now available to Washington taxpayers.

The service – called IRS Direct File – allows filers to do their taxes without a middleman at no charge. Being mobile-friendly and interview-based, users can use a phone or a computer to file. The IRS wants people to know that IRS Direct File will not replace other third-party filing options.

The pilot program is available in 12 states and limited to certain types of income, credits and deductions for relatively simple returns. Types of taxes that fall under what IRS Direct File will allow are as follows:

Income reporting: W-2 wage income, Social Security and railroad retirement income, unemployment compensation and any interest of $1,500 or less.

Credits: earned Income Tax Credit, child tax credit and credit for other dependents.

Deductions: standard deduction, student loan interest and educator expenses.

You can read more about IRS Direct File on the IRS’s website. See if you’re eligible for the program here and you will have until April 15 to file using the program.
