WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The deadline to apply for the Whatcom Racial Equity Commission has been extended.
Residents have until 11:59 Friday night to apply for the newly created commission. It is looking to fill 15 open seats, with each candidate having specific experiences or backgrounds to add to a diverse group of members.
The commission was created through the Whatcom County Council in Oct. 2022 in an effort to eliminate all forms of racial inequity throughout the county. Approved members of the commission will gather, review and evaluate data to make recommendations on how to best support diversity and inclusion in the county.
Listen here to hear one of the members of the appointment committee, Dr. Vernon Damani Johnson, explain what the commission’s role will be in the community. You can apply for the Racial Equity Commission here.
