BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A person died at the Western Washington University pool Friday.

University Communications office said that a person first showed distress at the side of the pool, and she was then pulled out be lifeguards around noon. She became unresponsive after being pulled out of the water, which differs from the WWU Campus Advisory email sent out to all Western students. Staff were performing CPR when University Police and Bellingham paramedics reached the scene, but no one could revive her.

The pool is in the Wade King Recreation Center on WWU’s campus. Only current students, staff, degreed alumni and their close families can access the rec center.

The person is not a current WWU student according to University Communications.

The rec center’s website has a news update saying the pool and spa will be closed through Sunday, March 24.

This the second death in the facility in just over five years. In January 2019, 23-year-old Christopher Kuyvenhoven died at the rec center after using the poolside hot tub.
