BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A special meeting to decide on terminating ABC Recycling’s tenancy at the Port will be held Monday afternoon.
The Port of Bellingham gave ABC a notice of default late last month, stating that the recycling company has 30 days to comply with multiple violations of their lease. That deadline was last Thursday, March 21.
ABC’s violations include berthing a ship in an unauthorized location without permission and repeatedly violating Dept. of Ecology regulations. My Bellingham Now has previously reported about the ongoing relationship between ABC and Bellingham.
The Port will vote on the issue of sending a “Lease Termination Agreement” to the recycling company before going on to other items on the agenda during the meeting. If approved, the terminal lease termination will be for Sept. 30, 2024 with no option to renew.
The Port will also set a “Scrap Removal Deadline” for June 30, where ABC will not be allowed to bring in any more scrap metal and must remove all scrap from the premises by the end of that day. If ABC does not comply with the Scrap Removal Deadline, they will be fined $1,000 for every day or half day that there is still unauthorized material at the port.
The public meeting will begin at 1 p.m., with two public comment periods at 4 p.m. and at the end of the meeting. Comments can be made via phone, Zoom or in person at the Port of Bellingham’s Harbor Center office on Roeder Avenue. More information about joining the meeting can be found on the meeting’s agenda page.
