OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – For a system plagued with problems, a candidate for governor has a plan to fix Washington’s ferry system.

Current State Attorney General Bob Ferguson promises to follow through on a detailed plan for the ferries if he wins the November 2024 governor election.

He plans to place the head of the Washington State Ferries in a cabinet-level position, which would give a governor more ability for oversight of reforms. Ferguson promises to visit Washington’s islands to hear directly from those communities immediately after election.

Ferguson also intends to follow through on the reforms proposed in a November 2023 open letter from San Juan County leaders about the service disruptions.

The attorney general packaged other issues in his campaign platform in a comprehensive “public safety plan,” which tackles topics like the opioid epidemic and crime. Other candidates such as Dave Reichert, Mark Mullet and Semi Bird focused their campaigns on individual issues such as crime, housing, education and the economy.
