BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Us Sonics fans have been patient.
Since 2008, we have been waiting for what we believe to be the obvious return of our NBA franchise. It just makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is why is it taking so long?
Why can’t they just tell us that the Sonics are coming back to Seattle?
We get it, they have got to take care of the business stuff, but it’s going to be us and Las Vegas, right? Haven’t they tortured us long enough?
Granted, the NBA needs to finalize their big fancy zillion dollar media deal. They need to make sure everybody gets a massive payday (except TNT and Charles Barkley). They have pretty much wrapped up the 11-year media deal as of this year, so what are we waiting for?
It’s been floated that Vancouver, Canada could still be in contention to get a team. Didn’t the whole Grizzly failure take them out of contention? Side note: how many grizzly bears have been spotted in Memphis?
Mexico City has been said to be a possibility. I’m all for expansion, but let’s take care of the obvious stuff first, like Las Vegas and Seattle.
Remember when Key Arena was the problem? We put 17,000 fans in the seats for every game, but we didn’t have the rich people luxury boxes. Enter Climate Pledge Arena. It has all the things they “need” and then some. The fanbase sure has not gone anywhere. In fact, they still wear their fan gear (assuming it still fits after all these years) proudly around town. In fact, it’s considered the coolest fan merch in Seattle.
Now that the NBA has gotten over its fear of gambling, Las Vegas is a great fit for the league. They have proven to be a major league city with the addition of the Raiders and the soon-to-be Las Vegas A’s. Why not throw in the NBA franchise in America’s playground?
As for Seattle, the market has grown a lot since the team was stolen by Oklahoma City by a bunch of lawyers who lied to us. We have added the NHL with a great deal of excitement. Despite a less-than-spectacular season last year, the Kraken have generated a solid fanbase and appear to have a bright future. If a team named after a big fake octopus can find success, imagine what a team who has been there and done that can do. The Sonics fanbase will party for days when the announcement comes down…
Despite the media deal being pretty much done, we are told the official announcement will not come until October.
We’ve waited a long time. We’re almost there.
Right?
I guess we’ll just have to wait until this fall.
