BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – An inmate at the Whatcom County Jail faces additional charges after fashioning a weapon out of an electronic device.
Whatcom County Sheriff’s spokesperson Deb Slater says that corrections deputies noticed a large chunk of plastic was missing from a tablet on Monday, Aug 26.
The tablet was last used by 33-year-old Charles Quintanilla, and the plastic was later recovered in his cell.
Quintanilla admitted to grinding the piece of plastic down to a sharp edge and fashioning a handle on it out of bandages. A sticker with the tablet’s serial number on it was also located on the handmade weapon.
Quintanilla has been in custody for attempted murder among other charges since October 2023.
He now faces additional weapon and malicious mischief charges.
