The Mariners’ road trip went off to a rocky start over the long weekend.

Seattle fell to the Oakland A’s on a walk-off homer last night just after losing the last two games of their series against the LA Angels.

Saturday’s loss to LA also came in walk-off fashion.

The Mariners have dug themselves into a deeper hole into the race for the AL West, now standing six games behind the first-place Astros.

The M’s will look to snap their three-game skid tonight with Luis Castillo on the mound for Game Two against the A’s.

The Washington Huskies’ football team got off to a strong start under new coach Jedd Fisch.

The Huskies rebounded from a scoreless first quarter to handle Weber State 35-3 on Saturday.

Will Rogers impressed in his debut for UW, throwing for 250 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Jonah Coleman led the ground attack with 127 yards and three TD’s.

 

Across the state, the Washington State Cougars opened their season with a barn-burner.

The Cougs scored nine of their 10 touchdowns from at least 30 yards out in a 70-30 statement win over Portland State.

John Mateer threw for 352 yards and five touchdowns while running for another in his starting debut for Wazzu.

Stephen Hall added a 100 yard interception return in the smackdown.

It was the first time the Cougs hit 70 points since 1997.

 

The Sounders fell to the Portland Timbers 1-0 on Saturday.

Defender Juan Mosquera scored his first goal of the season early in the second half and the Sounders couldn’t recover.

With the win, Portland pulled into a three-way tie with Seattle and the Houston Dynamo for sixth place in the Western Conference.

Meanwhile, Seattle Reign FC edged out Racing Louisville 3-2 to extend their unbeaten streak to six games.

 

The Seattle Storm have secured a spot in the WNBA playoffs.

Despite clinching their postseason ticket over the weekend, the Storm fell to the Connecticut Sun 93-86 on Sunday.

Jewell Loyd scored a game-high 27 points, but it wasn’t enough as Seattle lost the fifth of its last seven games.

The Storm only have eight regular season games left before the playoffs start.

They’re back in Connecticut tonight as they look to get revenge against the Sun.

 

And a Whatcom County native made a statement in the Paris Paralympics.

18-year-old Elouan Gardon from Acme notched a bronze medal in the 4000-meter track cycling race on Saturday.

He’s the youngest member of the 13 U.S. Paralympics Cycling team members and was the first to earn a medal.
