The Houston Astros’ dominance over the American League has come to an end.

The Mariners’ division rival had their season ended in a 5-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers this afternoon in the AL Wild Card round.

Andy Ibanez hit a tiebreaking three-run double in the eighth inning to power the win for Detroit.

It was the Tigers’ second win of the best-of-three series, as they now advance to the AL Divisional Series, where they’ll face the Cleveland Guardians.

The win also ended Houston’s run of seven consecutive appearances in the ALCS.

No one was happier than Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, who led Houston to a championship in 2017 before being fired in the aftermath of their sign-stealing scandal.

Mariners broadcaster Dave Sims could be on his way to Cooperstown.

The M’s play-by-play man was named as one of 10 finalists for the National Baseball Hall of Fame award for excellence in broadcasting.

Sims had just finished up his 20th year calling Mariners baseball and has earned three straight awards for Washington Sportscaster of the Year.

The award winner will be announced in December.

Speaking of the Hall of Fame…

This weekend is a big one for Western Washington University Athletics.

Western’s national championship-winning women’s soccer teams from 2016 and 2022 are being inducted into the WWU Athletics Hall of Fame.

The celebration begins Saturday morning with an induction ceremony at Carver Gym and continues later in the day with a special sideline party just before their 2 pm game against Western Oregon.

It’s part of what the school is calling the “Year of the Viking.”

All 13 of Western’s national title winning teams are set to be inducted into the school’s hall of fame during the 2024-25 academic year.

The Kraken are back tonight for their last warm-up before the season begins.

They’re hosting the Edmonton Oilers in both teams’ final preseason game.

Seattle will look to enter the season on a high note after going 1-3-1 so far this preseason.

Coverage begins at 6:30 and puck drops at 7 on KPUG.

The Kraken play their season opener at home this Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues.

Russell Wilson will likely have to push back his black and gold debut once again.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says the team is again preparing to start Justin Fields this week.

Fields has provided steady quarterback play to Pittsburgh while helping to lead them to a 3-1 record.

It comes as Russ was limited in today’s practice while still nursing a calf injury.

Elsewhere in the NFL, a star receiver out West could be on the move.

Davantae Adams requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday.

The Raiders followed yesterday by telling other teams they could consider trading Adams for a package that includes a second-round draft pick and additional pieces.

The 31-year-old Adams is a 3x former All-Pro and is under contract through 2026.
