OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A bill introduced in the Washington state Senate could provide significant relief for older homeowners.

SB 5020, which was pre-filed on Tuesday, would exempt all Washington residents over the age of 75 from paying property taxes.

The bill—filed by Republican Senator Phil Fortunato—also includes protections for seniors who reside in hospitals, nursing homes or assisted living facilities.

The state already offers some property tax reductions for seniors who meet certain income thresholds, but this new bill would apply regardless of their household income.

Washington’s 2025 legislative session begins on Jan. 13 and runs through April 27.
