BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Western Washington University is celebrating the life of late broadcaster Mark Scholten with Mark Scholten Night at Carver Gym on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Mark’s family will be recognized and presented with a special gift, followed by a video tribute to many of his memorable calls before the Viking women take the court against Alaska Fairbanks.
Mark passed away in August 2023 at the age of 54 following a more than 30-year career with 1170 KPUG and 790 KGMI. He was a skilled broadcaster of sports at all levels but was especially known for his knowledge of and dedication to Whatcom County teams, their athletes and coaches.
Vikings women’s basketball coach Carmen Dolfo grew close to Mark over his years of calling the team’s games and sees the celebration as well-deserved for the iconic broadcaster.
“He just was such a great man, I mean he had so much enthusiasm; he knew everybody, he knew every stat, he knew your team and he took the time to get to know the things that were important to our program and other people’s programs,” Dolfo told KPUG’s Allan Fee on The Zone. “He just was treasured by so many people.”

“He just had a genuine care for others and what was important to them. He just made everybody around him better.”
The WWU women have overcome early-season struggles to win four of their last five games going into their Thursday matchup against Alaska Anchorage. They currently sit at fourth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, or GNAC, standings.
The Vikings also feature several local standouts that Mark enjoyed watching, including Lynden Christian’s Libby Stump and Demi Dykstra, Lynden High School’s Anna VanderYacht and Sehome’s Aspen Garrison.
You can buy tickets for Mark Scholten Night on WWU’s website.
