BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Over the weekend, the life of late broadcaster Mark Scholten was honored at Carver Gym prior to a Western Washington University women’s basketball game.
Scholten’s family was recognized and given a gift by coach Carmen Dolfo and assistant coach Stacey Turrell, followed by a video in Scholten’s memory.
Coach Dolfo reflected on her time with Scholten over the years, stating how he was well-versed in WWU women’s basketball.
“He just was such a great man, I mean he had so much enthusiasm; he knew everybody, he knew every stat, he knew your team and he took the time to get to know the things that were important to our program and other people’s programs,” Dolfo told KPUG’s Allan Fee on The Zone. “He just was treasured by so many people.”

The Western women took it from there and beat Alaska Fairbanks 68-50. The Viks started out a bit slow, trailing most of the first quarter to a Fairbanks team that owns the worst record in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). But WWU scored six straight points to cap off the quarter and went on to take a nine-point leading going into halftime. Their defense turned it on in the third quarter, only allowing eight points, and the Viks never looked back.
Sophomore guard and former Lynden Christian standout Demi Dykstra led all scorers with 20 points in the win. It helped Western clinch a spot in the GNAC Championships, a postseason tournament that pits the top six teams in the conference against each other. The Vikings are looking to win their third consecutive postseason GNAC crown.
The Western women now improve to 15-9 on the season and 10-5 in conference play. They have three games left in the regular season and just one more home game. It will take place against Simon Fraser at 7 pm on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the second half of a doubleheader that features both the men’s and women’s teams at Carver Gym.
