WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – March is almost here, and many Whatcom County residents are itching for warmer weather. Alas, the forecast says we are in for a few more weeks of chilly temperatures. Thankfully, there are plenty of fun events this weekend that will have people laughing, dancing and perhaps even pondering the absurdity of life.
How are your fort-building skills holding up? If you’re unsure, head down to Bloedel Donovan on Friday, Feb. 28. The City of Bellingham Parks and Recreation is hosting Fort Fight Friday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Bring sheets, pillows, cardboard and Styrofoam with you to go along with the tape, markers and chairs they will have for you on-site and get to work.
Teams of two to four people can build the forts before they are judged for creativity. Then, each team will get dodgeballs and the last fort standing will win the coveted Best Design award.
Registration is required for Fort Fight Friday and the cost is $25 per team. Go to the City of Bellingham’s website for all the details on this event and more.
Once the dust settles at Bloedel, you should have time to pop over to Larrabee Lager for Comedy Night. Laughs at Larrabee welcomes AJ Norris, Nikki Kilpatrick and Doris DeSousza on Friday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
It will be a night of unforgettable jokes, great beer and delicious pizza. Larrabee Lager is also hosting live music this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Head to larrabeelagerco.com for all the details.
If you are a fan of absurdist humor, the Idiom Theater has you covered. Eugene Ionesco’s Exit the King is a play about a 400-year-old king dealing with colliding planets, crumbling walls, and plans to take everyone and everything with him to the afterlife. The play features biting satire and political humor while exploring cycles of life, death and rebirth.
Exit the King runs this Friday and Saturday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. If you cannot make it this weekend, fear not. Two more shows will run on Thursday, March 6 and Friday, March 7.
Our featured live show this week is at the Shakedown in downtown Bellingham. Seattle’s Tinsley will bring their brand of heartfelt indie rock to the stage on Saturday, March 1, at 9 p.m.
Playing with Tinsley are two Bellingham bands, Cat Valley and Cat Positive. Both cat-named bands play a heavier punk influenced brand of pop. Fans of everything from Courtney Barnett to NOFX do not want to miss this one.
