OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Only YOU can prevent wildfires – and now, your license plate can help too.

Gov. Bob Ferguson signed SBB 5444 into law on Tuesday, authorizing a special Smokey Bear license plate that will fund wildfire prevention efforts across the state.

Smokey has been the worldwide face of wildfire awareness since 1944 with a focus on human-caused fires.

According to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), roughly 90% of wildfires every year are caused by humans.

The specialty plate will be available to buy on Nov. 1 with an initial $40 cost and a renewal fee of $30.

All the proceeds will support the DNR’s wildfire prevention programs.
