WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – An upgrade to fire danger levels didn’t stop residents in Whatcom County from lighting fireworks over the weekend.
The Whatcom County Fire Marshal says that 68 fire and fireworks related calls were made between July 4 and July 6.
Four of those were found to be injuries caused by fireworks.
The latest statistics came just days after the Marshal’s Office upgraded fire danger levels from “moderate” to “high”.
During that same time span, 16 people were arrested on suspicion of DUIs, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy says that officers conducted extra DUI enforcement during the holiday. She adds that officers have made nearly 250 DUI arrests in Bellingham alone since the start of this year.
