Mariners News
It’s official: Eugenio Suarez is back in Seattle.
The M’s acquired the All-Star third baseman from the Diamondbacks yesterday in exchange for first baseman Tyler Locklear and right-handed pitching prospects Juan Burgos and Hunter Cranton.
The 34-year-old Suarez is in the midst of a career year, ranking fifth in the majors with 36 home runs. He returns to Seattle after the team dealt him following the 2023 season.
The Mariners now boast one of the strongest lineups in the league, with MVP contender Cal Raleigh and All-Stars Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena. Geno will also reunite with Josh Naylor, his hard-hitting teammate in Arizona who the M’s traded for last week.
As for the team’s outgoing players, Locklear had just gotten called up to the majors after impressing in Triple-A Tacoma. Cranton and Burgos are the team’s 16th and 17th ranked prospects, respectively.
The Houston Astros responded with a reunion of their own just hours ago, trading for 2x All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa from the Twins. Correa was part of the Astros’ World Series-winning team in 2017 and has reportedly agreed to play third base with Houston.
The Mariners will look to bring the good vibes into the start of a key divisional series tonight. They’re back at home for the start of a four-game series against the Texas Rangers.
Seattle and Texas own the same record, currently tied for second place in the AL West and for the final wild card spot.
The Mariners are coming off a tight series loss to the Athletics, where they lost the rubber match 5-4 last night. Jorge Polanco, Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena all homered, but All-Star starter Bryan Woo struggled on the mound, giving up five runs through six innings.
Meanwhile, the Rangers have been one of the hottest teams in baseball, with 10 wins in their last 13 games.
George Kirby and the Mariners will look to slow them down in tonight’s series opener. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.
Bells News
The Bells have the day off today after losing their rubber match against the Kelowna Falcons last night. Bellingham fell to Kelowna 8-7 after spending much of the game in the lead.
The Bells opened with two runs in the first and had a 5-1 lead after the fifth inning. But the Falcons exploded for seven runs in the sixth to put them ahead for good.
The Bells are now tied with Edmonton for first place in the overall North Division season standings.
They’ll hit the road tomorrow for a three game series against the AppleSox in Wenatchee before heading back home for their final series of the regular season next week.
Seahawks News
The Seahawks will be without arguably their best offensive lineman for most of training camp.
Coach Mike Macdonald announced today that left tackle Charles Cross will miss multiple weeks after undergoing finger surgery. But Cross is expected to be ready by the season opener.
Cross dislocated the ring finger on his right hand several times and had been attempting to play through it. Macdonald said he wanted to continue playing, but decided that surgery made sense once he learned he’d be back by Week 1.
Cross has been the team’s starting left tackle since they drafted him ninth overall in 2022.
Meanwhile, a former Seahawk tight end has found a new home. Noah Fant signed with the Cincinnati Bengals today on a one-year deal.
Seattle released Fant earlier this month after spending three seasons with the team.
He was a major piece of the Russell Wilson trade to Denver, but was relatively underwhelming during his tenure as a Seahawk, catching just one touchdown in the past two seasons.
