BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Ferndale man awaiting trial in a child sex abuse case is facing new charges.
Court documents state that a child known to the suspect reported a history of sexual abuse and coercion to police last July.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old John Brooks, fled to Canada after learning that charges had been filed against him.
Canadian officials detained him in October, and Bellingham Police warrant officers seized Brooks’ cell phone and analyzed the contents as evidence.
Last month, investigators released their report on the phone’s contents.
Several conversations with a second suspect, identified as a 40-year-old Las Vegas woman, detailed extensive conversations about Brooks abusing the child.
The pair also discussed sexually assaulting the female suspect’s underage daughter.
Brooks was taken into custody August 4 on a warrant for sexually exploiting a minor.
The female suspect has not been arrested yet.
A tentative trial date for Brooks’ other child sex abuse charges is scheduled for October.
