POINT ROBERTS, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Port of Bellingham has released a plan to boost the local economy in Whatcom County’s most isolated community.
The Port published a state-funded report by a professional consulting firm this week aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by Point Roberts.
The Port says the enclave’s outsized dependence on Canadian tourism has left it vulnerable in the wake of trade tariffs and reduced cross-border travel. The strategy includes plans to publicly acquire and revitalize the Point Roberts Marina to support tourism, commercial and residential development, and connection to the U.S. mainland.
It also notes priorities such as expanding broadband infrastructure, improving the sewer system and establishing a Resilience Hub to support small businesses.
Port staff will present the strategy to a community advisory committee in Point Roberts on Oct. 16 before getting feedback from residents.
