World Cup News
The US is gearing up for their first knockout round match of the World Cup.
They’re playing Bosnia-Herzegovina at 5:00 with a chance to win their first knockout match in over two decades. Team USA enters the match as the strong favorite, but Paraguay’s historic upset over Germany earlier this week showed that no country is safe.
The match will be played at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, home of the 49ers. If the US wins, they’ll advance to the Round of 16 in Seattle on Monday where they’d face Belgium, who is coming off a stunning 3-2 comeback win over Senegal.
Before that, England rallied from an early deficit to beat Congo DR 2-1 thanks to a pair of late goals by Harry Kane.
Mariners News
The Mariners have the day off today so they can catch the US knockout match. They’re coming off a dominant 8-3 win over the Angels last night.
Neither team scored until the sixth inning, when Seattle exploded for five runs. The Angels responded with three runs in the seventh, but the M’s answered right back with three runs of their own to secure the win.
Julio Rodriguez and Colt Emerson each had three of the Mariners’ 13 total hits. Bryan Woo took a shutout into the seventh inning before giving up two runs, tying George Kirby for his team-leading seventh win of the season.
The M’s still sit half a game behind the first-place Texas Rangers, who have won six straight. The Mariners will look to complete the sweep tomorrow in Game 3 against the Angels.
Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG with Bryce Miller on the mound.
Meanwhile the Mariners have a pair of top prospects who are headed to the All-Star Futures Game.
Pitchers Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan were each named to the American League’s team. Anderson has impressed in Double-A Arkansas this season, owning a 1.22 ERA with 99 strikeouts in just under 67 innings.
He’s the fifth ranked prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline after the M’s took him third overall in last year’s draft.
Sloan is coming off throwing six perfect innings with 11 strikeouts a few weeks ago as the MLB’s 8th ranked prospect.
The futures game takes place on July 12 in Philadelphia, two days before the MLB All-Star Game.
Bells News
The Bells stumbled to open the second half of their season last night. They fell to the Edmonton Riverhawks 8-6.
Bells catcher Jake Lyall homered, but it wasn’t enough to stop the red-hot Riverhawks, who have won five straight.
It’s been a rough patch for Bellingham recently, having lost three of their last four. They’ll look to even the series in Edmonton tonight, first pitch is at 6:05 local time.
The Bells will return to Joe Martin Field next Tuesday for a non-league game.
Kraken News
It’s been a busy start to NHL free agency for the Kraken.
General manager Jason Botterill announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forward Mackie Samoskevich. The 23-year-old forward was recently acquired in a trade with the Florida Panthers, where Seattle gave up a first-round pick and a conditional second-rounder.
He’ll now begin his tenure with the Kraken on a three-year deal worth an average annual value of just under $4 million.
Meanwhile, the team lost former alternate captain Jaden Schwartz, who signed a three-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche. The Kraken have three remaining unrestricted free agents: Jamie Oleksiak, Eeli Tolvanen and Matt Murray.
