POINT ROBERTS, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A permit has been approved to extend public camping opportunities in Point Roberts.

The Whatcom County Hearing Examiner granted a conditional use permit Wednesday, July 8 for the proposed 16.5-acre Nielson Campground. Four property owners submitted their initial application in 2024, but were required to make several adjustments prior to its approval.

The proposed site will include 166 individual camping sites, 18 RV parking spots and 12 cabins, along with restrooms and recreational facilities.

Numerous neighbors near the Dogwood Way property submitted comments opposing the project during a public hearing earlier this month. Issues range from traffic and litter increases to a lack of public safety and fire supression resources near the campground.

Currently, Point Roberts only has one public campground at Lighthouse Marine Park.
