BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Some Bellingham residents could see smoke coming from unexpected areas next week.

The city says that their Public Works crews will be conducting smoke tests within the sewer system starting on Monday, August 17th. Non-toxic smoke testing will help crews determine areas where the city’s wastewater system may be inundated with other water flows. That includes stormwater and groundwater, which can both lead to flooding if it infiltrates the wastewater system.

Sections of the Lettered Streets and Cornwall Park neighborhoods will undergo smoke testing between Monday and Thursday, August 20th. That includes G St. between W Holly St. and W North St., as well as E North St. between Cornwall Ave. and Ellis St.

Residents will receive written notification of the work in advance. Anyone with heart or respiratory issues living within the affected areas should contact Public Works before testing begins.
