WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Bellingham man is in custody after a child was injured in a suspected DUI crash.
Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deb Slater says deputies were called to a crash on E Bakerview Road just past the intersection with Hannegan Road around midnight on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
They arrived to find a vehicle that had hit a utility pole before ending up in a ditch.
Deputies also found a child unbuckled in the front seat who suffered what Slater describes as “substantial bodily injuries.”
The child, whose age was not disclosed by the sheriff’s office, was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.
Deputies say the 28-year-old driver was showing signs of impairment and they noticed several alcoholic beverage containers inside the vehicle.
The man was booked into the Whatcom County Jail Tuesday evening and faces charges of vehicular assault, reckless endangerment and driving with a suspended license.
He is currently being held without bail.
