BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Drivers should plan for heavy traffic and an overnight street closure in downtown Bellingham Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Western Washington University’s annual First Night Out celebration is expected to draw thousands of students downtown, with activities continuing through 9 p.m.

The walk from Red Square to downtown Bellingham begins at 5 p.m., followed by live music, games, food and entertainment on Cornwall Avenue. Dozens of downtown businesses and community organizations will also offer discounts, activities, free food and merchandise for WWU students throughout the evening.

Although no roads will be closed for First Night Out, WWU says the large crowds and street activities could lead to temporary traffic slowdowns on Cornwall Avenue and other nearby downtown streets.

Later in the night, part of downtown will be closed for a film production.

State Street between Holly and Chestnut streets will close from 10 p.m. Wednesday through 3 a.m. Thursday. The closure includes the block outside The Shakedown and the adjacent alley behind the music venue. Parking restrictions will also be in effect, with production vehicles occupying spaces on both sides of the street.

Traffic impacts to be expected in Deming region for film shoot

The production is also expected to bring increased activity to the Deming area through Friday, Sept. 25.

The Nooksack Indian Tribe says the crew has rented parking areas near its Social Services, Youth Services and Enrollment facilities for crew vehicles, equipment and support trailers.

Equipment and crews began arriving Wednesday, with the largest amount of activity expected Thursday during filming. Equipment removal is scheduled to begin Friday, although some vehicles and equipment could remain through the weekend.

Drivers traveling through downtown Bellingham and the Deming area should allow extra time and watch for traffic control measures and increased vehicle activity.
