ORCAS ISLAND, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man was rescued after his vessel capsized near the San Juans.

The U.S. Coast Guard says that the 45-year-old kayaker sent a mayday alert north of Orcas Island around 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25.

Crews from the Bellingham Coast Guard station and a helicopter team located the man and his capsized kayak and were able to get him out of the water.

Another person kayaking with the man didn’t capsize and was able to return to shore on their own.

The Coast Guard credited the kayakers for being well-prepared for an emergency, to include their use of VHF radios and dry suits.
