BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham Bird Week wrapped up last week with the inauguration of the city’s new official bird.

On Friday, Oct. 9, Mayor Kim Lund doled out the award from the Bellingham Cruise Terminal Dome Room.

Lund announced that voters had selected the Great Blue Heron to become the city’s official avian representative.

Nominations were gathered throughout September, with ten choices being selected in October for the public to vote on.

Notable locations to spot Great Blue Herons around Bellingham are the Post Point Heron Colony and Little Squalicum Park, per the city’s website.

Great Blue Heron nesting locations are designated as Washington State Priority Areas, with habitat conservation in mind.

To avoid disturbing them, the city asks that people refrain from flying drones near heron nests, limit noise in their vicinity and maintain a distance of at least 200 feet from their colonies.
