BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Plans are moving forward for a new park along Bellingham’s waterfront.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Committee approved the new name for the 17-acre area commonly known as Cornwall Beach Park during their meeting on Monday, January 23rd.

The park, which is located between Boulevard Park and the south end of Cornwall Avenue, will now be known as Salish Landing.

Officials opened the naming process to the public last year and over 500 submissions were considered.

Nearby Glass Beach will also be incorporated into Salish Landing, but its name will remain intact.

City officials approved a plan for the park’s creation in 2014 after acquiring the land in 2009.

The area was previously used as a dump and for several industrial facilities, and cleanup efforts will continue as initial construction gets underway.

There is no estimated timeline as to when the park will be completed.
