FERNDALE, Wash. – A 5-year-old girl died from a fentanyl overdose last month and now her parents and another man face 1st degree murder charges.

Ferndale Police say the child died March 8th at a residence in the 2300 block of Douglas Road in Ferndale.

Her parents, 35-year-old Melissa Welch and 33-year-old Michael Doane, and 32-year-old Cody Craig, who is Welch’s boyfriend, were all present when the child died and evidence showed they had used fentanyl at the residence.

Investigators found fentanyl, methamphetamine and methadone in the home in areas accessible by the girl and an 8-year-old sibling.

Police say all three adults showed extreme indifference to the safety of the children.

Welch and Craig were also found to have distributed fentanyl after the girl’s death.

They were arrested Thursday, April 13, at a home on Northwest Avenue in Bellingham.

Doane was also taken into custody April 13 at the Ferndale residence.

The 8-year-old child has been placed with other family members.
