BELLINGHAM, Wash. – As things heat up over the next few days, the National Weather Service wants you to be prepared.
They have issued a heat advisory for western Whatcom and Skagit Counties starting at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The advisory is currently set to expire on Monday at 8 p.m.
Temperatures could hit 90 in areas such as Lynden and Everson, with most other areas seeing highs in the 80s during that time.
The NWS is advising people to stay hydrated, and to check in on relatives and the elderly especially if they do not have adequate cooling in their homes.
As warmer weather arrives, many people will be heading to lakes and rivers to cool off.
UW Medicine says that brings the danger of drowning, which kills 4,000 Americans every year and is the leading cause of death for toddlers.
Top tips to stay safe in the water include wearing a life jacket, avoiding alcohol and other intoxicants, and swimming with a buddy or a focused supervisor.
While the air may be hot, water temperatures are still very cold and can cause temporary shock.
