BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Bellingham will lose a piece of its history in coming weeks.
The Parks and Recreation Department says the remains of the old railroad trestle across Whatcom Creek will be removed in June.
The historic structure was part of the railway that connected Lake Whatcom and the Bellingham waterfront.
It has been a distinct feature of Whatcom Falls Park, towering over the Whatcom Creek Trail just west of Electric Avenue.
The city detoured the trail away from the structure after a piece of bracing broke off in 2020 and it was found to be unsound.
The removal process has involved historic documentation, extensive testing, and permitting from multiple agencies because of the sensitive environment.
The city may keep some of the pieces if they are salvageable.
