OLYMPIA, Wash. – The deadline to opt out of the state’s long-term care payroll deduction is quickly approaching.

Washington state health officials say that about 200,000 residents qualify for an exemption from the WA Cares Fund but have not applied.

The new payroll tax will take effect on July 1st.

The state’s Employment Security Department said that so far, about 10,000 people have opted out.

Spouses of active-duty military members, people who work but do not live in Washington, and temporary foreign workers are all eligible for exemptions.
