BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The state Department of Labor and Industries wants to hear from the public as it hammers out permanent rules for outdoor workers amid wildfire smoke.

The department issued emergency rules in 2021 and now wants to make them permanent as wildfires have increased in size and number in recent years.

The rules would require employers to plan for wildfire smoke, monitor air quality and provide respiratory protection during smoky conditions.

Exposure to particulate matter in wildfire smoke causes irritation and difficulty breathing.

Long-term exposure can damage the heart, nervous system and lungs and cause illnesses including cancer.

L&I is taking public comment by mail, fax or email and at a series of live forums including one in Bellingham on July 20th.
