BELLINGHAM, WA – (KGMI.com) A new library in Birch Bay has reached its fundraising goal.
The Whatcom County Council allocated $315,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds earlier this month to support construction of the Birch Bay Vogt Library Express.
That, combined with a $2 million grant from the state and private donations, will fund the 1,700 square foot building that will be located within the existing Vogt home at 7948 Birch Bay Drive.
The Whatcom County Library System attributes the name “library express” to its size and unique features, including after-hours access for cardholders to pick up some late-night reading material.
Construction will include building a new foundation, parking expansion, roof repairs, weather-proofed windows, public safety upgrades and a full interior renovation of the home.
WCLS is currently reviewing proposals from contractors to design and build the new library.
A construction timeline will be developed in 2024.
