OLYMPIA, WA. – (KGMI.com) A conservative group has turned signatures in to the secretary of state for two more initiatives aimed at rolling back laws recently passed by majority Democrats.

I-2109 would halt Washington’s new capital gains tax.

It was passed in 2021 and levies a 7% tax on returns from assets such as stocks, bonds, business interests or other assets over $250,000.

Retirement accounts, real estate, and transactions related to farming are among exemptions from the tax.

Opponents call the tax an unconstitutional income tax while proponents say it is a step toward making Washington’s taxing system more equitable.

I-2111 would bar the state, county or local governments from levying an income tax.

They are both initiatives to the legislature which can pass them, alter them or allow them to go to voters.

The group Let’s Go Washington has also turned in signatures for measures that would undo the state’s carbon emissions law and relax rules on police pursuits.
