CONCRETE, Wash. – Skagit County is seeing a record-breaking surge of sockeye salmon in the Baker River.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates a total of more than 65,000 sockeye will return to Baker this year.

They say the current sockeye run has already beat the previous record of 51,000 set in 2015.

The surge has allowed both the state and tribes to increase fishing opportunities this season.

The daily limit for fishers at Baker Lake was increased from three fish per day to five fish just a week after it opened.

Fish and Wildlife is still awaiting the year’s final run tally in October.
