BELLINGHAM, WA. – (KGMI.com) Bellingham School District’s alternative education support facility finally has a short-term heating solution after weeks of uncertainty.
The Bellingham Family Partnership Program or BFPP has had a broken boiler since earlier this fall.
BFPP has operated out of Larrabee Elementary School’s facility since 2014 and provides support to homeschooled students grades K through 8.
The district recommended bundling students in warm layers and blankets when coming to class in late November.
After repeated attempts to fix the old boiler, the district was preparing to close the facility for the school year when the community spoke out.
The program serves hundreds in the Bellingham area, and many told Superintendent Greg Baker to keep their community under one roof.
On Monday, December 4th, the district sent out a message that an external heating unit will be installed and pipe heat throughout the facility’s ducts and vents.
This is a short-term solution, and the district is conducting a feasibility study to determine long-term improvements.
