BELLINGHAM, WA – Mayor Seth Fleetwood says a workgroup will meet to discuss the homeless encampment behind Walmart.

The mayor addressed growing concerns over the encampment on social media during the Bellingham City Council’s meeting on Tuesday.

He said it will be a similar process to the City’s operation on Deemer St behind Winco a few months ago.

Fleetwood called that operation a “successful action” in clearing the Deemer St. encampment that he said had grown dangerous in a number of ways.

Still, he admitted challenges the city will face with their new focus, saying the Walmart encampment is “much larger.”

Fleetwood offered limited information about the workgroup but said he will share more with the Council as the situation develops.
