BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A local first responder is hanging it up after decades of service.

The Bellingham Fire Department said in a Facebook post that after 35 years of service, Battalion Chief Chuck Henkel is retiring.

Born and raised in Bellingham, Henkel started his career with BFD back in 1988.

Throughout his career, he has been in involved in many programs including the SERP Hazmat Team, Fireboat Program, and Respiratory Protect Program.

He worked to develop the Specialized Emergency Response Program, teaming up with local agencies to mitigate hazardous material incidents, and was a catalyst in the marine fireboat program where he helped design and build the current fireboat, The Salish Star.

Henkel says he values the relationships he has made with member of the department and appreciates the support over the years from his wife and family.
