BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The waiting game continues for residents near a wildfire burning in Lake Whatcom Park.
Blue Canyon Road remains closed for non-residents and a Level 2 evacuation notice is still in place for residents living on that road.
That means residents should be prepared to evacuation if it does become necessary.
Lightning is believed to have started the fire Monday evening, August 28th.
It has burned about 20 to 30 acres of steep terrain on the southeast side of the lake.
Aircraft and Department of Natural Resources hotshot crews have been fighting the fires.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office closed all boat launches to keep vessels away from fire-fighting efforts.
Lake Whatcom Park and the Hertz Trail along the water’s edge are closed.
DNR says lightning is also the suspected cause of a second small fire that flared Monday night near Sumas.
Crews will continue to fight remaining flames today.
