FERNDALE, Wash. – A Cherry Point petroleum company has reached a multi-million-dollar settlement for air-borne pollution it released over six years.

The Northwest Clean Air Agency alleged in 2021 that Petrogas had made changes to its facility that resulted in hundreds of tons of propane emissions each year from 2014 to 2020.

The company made the changes without applying for the proper permits, which would have required it to install controls that would have prevented the emissions.

The head of the Northwest Clean Air Agency says the violations occurred under previous management and current Petrogas managers have been cooperative and forthcoming.

They have agreed to a $4 million settlement and have installed temporary controls while a permanent fix is developed.

Petrogas produces and exports liquefied petroleum gas at the plant near Ferndale.
