BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The vehicle encampment along Cornwall Avenue in downtown Bellingham has been cleared as the city makes room for a new project.

Public Works Director Eric Johnston and BPD Lt. Claudia Murphy said in a statement that the city will begin construction of bicycle lanes on both sides of the street sometime in September.

The new lanes will connect the future park at Cornwall Beach to the Waterfront and downtown Bellingham.

City officials have slowly added parking regulations on Cornwall over the past year to clear the street for construction.

People living in the vehicles were warned many times about the new parking regulations to give them ample time to plan ahead, according to Johnston and Murphy.

Most of the vehicles in the encampment were moved by their owner.

Some had to be towed, though officials do not have an estimate of how many.
