BIRCH BAY, Wash. – The Whatcom County Council unanimously voted in their latest meeting to increase residential density in Birch Bay by changing zoning code regulations.
The Northen Light reports the changes allow smaller minimum lot sizes and sets a minimum net residential density to ensure the land is being sufficiently used.
Birch Bay residents who spoke at the meeting voiced concerns about increasing residents when the area does not have sufficient public services to meet the current population.
Ben Elenbaas, who represents Birch Bay on the council, acknowledged the concerns but said he believes the housing increase is necessary.
The zoning code changes are expected to take effect in July.
