BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Evacuation levels have been lowered for residents impacted by the South Lake Whatcom Fire.

People living on Blue Canyon Rd are now under Level 1 “be ready” evacuation orders.

Blue Canyon Road remains closed to all but fire-related and resident traffic.

Fire fighters are working in steep and difficult terrain to maintain fire lines and contain the blaze.

Four fire crews with a total of 124 personnel are involved in fighting the fire.

Officials said the wildfire was 50 percent contained and burning around 40 acres as of Thursday evening, August 31st.

City of Bellingham officials have opened the lake for boating as of Friday morning, September 1st.

However, boaters are asked to avoid the area near the fire zone as fire debris has created hazards there.

And a 1.7-mile portion of the Hertz Trail along the water’s edge will reopen at noon.

Whatcom County Parks and Recreation officials urge people not to venture past “Trail Closed” signs.

Meanwhile, a small lightning strike wildfire near Everson has been fully contained.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said the Coal Creek fire is burning several miles up Sumas Mountain.

Two engines and ground crew members remain on the mountain to put out hot spots throughout the day.
