BELLINGHAM, WA. – A fishery was fined after spilling 40 gallons of fuel into Bellingham Bay.

The Washington State Department of Ecology says it fined Cape Augustine Fisheries $6,200 for two incidents that occurred in April of 2021.

An oil spill was first reported on water near the fishery’s boat and the crew did not cooperate with Ecology to look into its source.

Three days later, the boat spilled 40 gallons of diesel fuel into Bellingham Bay just after the department warned its crew not to let oil leak into the water.

Ecology says the crew did not report the spill or immediately address the known leak.

Cape Augustine was fined $1,800 for the first incident and $4,400 for the second spill.
